The people teaching
your child

We turn away more than 99% of applicants. Not because we're trying to be exclusive β€” because the bar for teaching someone's kid is genuinely high, and we take that seriously.

Every Magna tutor is a high academic achiever: state rankers, school duxes, and 99+ ATAR holders. But that's the minimum. What we really look for is whether they can sit across from a struggling Year 8 student and actually make the subject click.

Beyond grades, every tutor goes through our full screening process before they step into a single lesson.

How we screen every tutor

1
In-person interview
We meet every tutor face to face. Academic results alone don't tell us whether someone can teach β€” this does.
2
Double reference check
Two separate references, verified directly. We want to know how they show up when it matters.
3
Working With Children Clearance
Every tutor holds current, government-issued clearance. Non-negotiable, no exceptions.
We're a child-safe organisation. Every safeguarding measure we have in place exists because your child's wellbeing comes before everything else.

What makes the
difference

🎯

Syllabus-first teaching

Our tutors don't just know their subject β€” they know the NESA syllabus dot points, the marking guidelines, and exactly what examiners are looking for.

πŸ“

Internal assessment support

Internal marks count. We help students with essays, depth studies, investigation tasks, and school-based assessments throughout the year β€” not just at exam time.

πŸ“Š

Past paper mastery

Timed past papers, full marking feedback, and exam-strategy coaching so students walk into the exam room having already done this dozens of times.

Assessment-aware scheduling

We plan sessions around your school's assessment calendar. The week before a task, we're focused on that. Long-term, we're building toward October.

Years 7–10 Β· NSW

High School Tutoring
built for what's ahead

Years 7 to 10 are where the habits get set. Students who build strong skills and real understanding during these years arrive at the HSC with a genuine head start.

Online and in-home across Sydney and NSW

The years that
determine the HSC

Most students and parents underestimate how much Years 7–10 matter. The conceptual gaps that create HSC struggles β€” in Maths especially, but across English and Sciences too β€” almost always start somewhere in junior high school and quietly widen over years.

We work with high school students at two levels: catching up on gaps that have formed, and accelerating students who want to get ahead. Both matter. Either way, the goal is to arrive at Year 11 confident, prepared, and knowing how to study.

Maths, English, Science, History, Geography β€” all core subjects covered
Assessment and exam preparation throughout the year, not just at crunch time
Study skills and time management for students hitting senior school workloads
NSW curriculum aligned β€” we work alongside what students are doing at school

Setting up for the HSC

The students who do well in the HSC aren't always the most naturally talented β€” they're the ones who built the right foundations early.

Deep conceptual understanding, not just formula memorisation
Strong writing and analysis skills across all subjects
Consistent study habits that hold up under pressure
The confidence that comes from actually knowing your work

What we focus on
at each stage

Year 7

Transition & Foundations

High school is a big shift. We help students adjust to the workload, fill any primary school gaps, and build the study habits that will carry them through.

Year 8

Building Depth

Content gets more complex. We focus on genuine understanding β€” especially in Maths and Science β€” so nothing gets glossed over and left to cause problems later.

Year 9

Accelerating Performance

The push toward Year 10 and beyond. More sophisticated assessment tasks, more abstract concepts, and the start of serious exam skills development.

Year 10

HSC Readiness

Subject selection, preliminary content, and the mindset shift needed to succeed in senior school. Year 10 is the last chance to get ahead before it counts.

πŸ”

Find the gaps first

Before a new student starts, we assess where they actually are β€” not where they should be. Most gaps are fixable once they're identified clearly.

πŸ“‹

Assessment-aligned sessions

We plan around your child's school assessment schedule. No session is generic β€” each one connects to what's coming up at school.

🧭

Study skills alongside content

From Year 8 onwards, we actively teach how to study β€” not just what to study. Note-taking, time management, exam technique: all part of the package.

πŸ“ž

Kept parents in the loop

Regular progress updates after sessions. You don't find out what's going on at report card time β€” you already know.

πŸ”

Consistent tutors

Same tutor, every session. Relationships matter in teaching. We don't rotate β€” students build rapport and tutors build deep understanding of each student's needs.

Kindergarten – Year 6 Β· NSW

Primary School
Tutoring that sticks

The foundations your child builds at primary school shape how they learn for the rest of their education. We make sure those foundations are solid β€” and that school feels achievable, not daunting.

Online and in-home across Sydney and NSW

Strong foundations
from the start

A lot of parents wait until high school to get tutoring help β€” by which point gaps in primary school have had years to compound. The students who arrive at Year 7 confident and capable are often those who got solid support early on.

Our primary tutoring programs focus on Literacy and Numeracy, aligned with the NSW curriculum. Sessions are structured but designed to feel more like a conversation than a lesson β€” especially for younger students who need engagement as much as instruction.

We work closely with parents throughout, so you always know what's being covered and how your child is progressing.

K–2Early foundations β€” reading, phonics, counting, and basic number sense
3–4Building fluency β€” comprehension, writing structure, times tables, fractions
5–6High school readiness β€” analytical reading, essay writing, algebra foundations

What parents tell us

The most common thing we hear is that students who struggled to enjoy school start to actually look forward to their sessions. Results follow naturally.

My son went from refusing to read to reading before bed every night. The tutor just got him.
She finally understood fractions. Her teacher noticed the difference within two weeks.
The communication from Magna was excellent β€” we always knew what was happening.
Our daughter used to cry before school. Now she actually wants to go.

NAPLAN preparation included. If your child is in Years 3 or 5, we integrate targeted NAPLAN preparation into the program at no extra cost.

Literacy and Numeracy
done properly

πŸ“š Literacy

Reading and writing are the building blocks of every subject. We work on comprehension, expression, and the habits that make students confident communicators β€” on the page and off it.

  • Reading comprehension
  • Creative writing
  • Persuasive writing
  • Grammar and punctuation
  • Spelling strategies
  • Vocabulary development
  • Phonics (K–2)
  • Text response skills

πŸ“ Numeracy

Maths anxiety is real and it starts early. Our approach builds genuine understanding first β€” so students can solve problems they've never seen before, not just ones they've memorised.

  • Number sense and place value
  • Times tables and division
  • Fractions and decimals
  • Problem solving
  • Measurement and geometry
  • Data and statistics
  • Early algebra concepts
  • Mental maths strategies

How we teach
young learners

🎯

Diagnostic first

Before anything else, we figure out exactly where your child is β€” what they know, where the gaps are, and how they learn best. This isn't guesswork.

πŸ“–

NSW curriculum aligned

Every lesson links directly to what your child is doing at school. We're not teaching in a vacuum β€” we're supporting what their teacher is already doing.

πŸ’¬

Engagement over drilling

Especially for younger students, learning has to feel good. We keep sessions interactive, varied, and β€” where possible β€” fun. Motivated students learn faster.

πŸ”„

Consistent feedback loops

We track progress session by session and share updates with parents regularly. You're always in the loop β€” no surprises at report card time.

πŸ“ˆ

High school readiness

For Years 5–6, we build the critical thinking and study skills that make Year 7 a smooth transition instead of a shock.

Flexible delivery

Sessions run online or in-home, whichever suits your family's schedule. Weekday afternoons and weekends available across Sydney and NSW.

NAPLAN Prep
that actually works

Structured, data-driven NAPLAN preparation across all four test domains. We identify exactly where your child needs work and build from there β€” no generic practice packs, no guesswork.

Online and in-home across Sydney and NSW

Targeted prep,
not generic drilling

A lot of NAPLAN prep is just handing students practice papers and hoping for the best. We do it differently. Every student starts with a diagnostic assessment so we know precisely where they are in each domain β€” then we build a targeted plan around their actual gaps, not an assumed average.

NAPLAN tests core literacy and numeracy skills that students develop over years. With enough lead time, the gains can be significant. Even with limited prep time, the right strategy coaching and confidence work makes a real difference on test day.

A structured path
to NAPLAN confidence

1

Diagnostic assessment

We start by identifying exactly where your child sits across all four NAPLAN domains. This isn't optional β€” it's how we build a plan that actually targets the right things.

2

Targeted skill instruction

We teach explicitly into the gaps β€” not just give more practice papers. If a student struggles with inference in Reading, we teach inference. Deliberate, not random.

3

Timed practice under exam conditions

Regular timed practice with NAPLAN-style questions so the format is familiar and the time pressure doesn't rattle them on the day.

4

Feedback and adjustment

After every session and every practice set, we review what worked and what didn't β€” and update the plan accordingly. No wasted sessions.

NAPLAN typically runs in March each year. The earlier you start, the more improvement is possible β€” but it's never too late to add technique and confidence work.

The VCE is a two-year program with a lot moving at once β€” study scores, SACs, GAT, and external exams, all contributing to your ATAR. Students who do well aren't always the most naturally talented; they're the ones who know how to play the system intelligently and have the right support in place.

Our tutors have been through the VCE themselves, most with ATAR scores in the top percentiles. They know what VCAA examiners are looking for, how SAC marks are awarded, and where students typically drop marks unnecessarily.

QCE support that

Our QCE tutors understand the QCAA syllabus deeply β€” not just the content, but the assessment criteria, the marking standards, and the internal assessment formats that determine so much of a student's final result. Why weekly? The same rate as casual β€” but with a consistent tutor, a structured plan, and ongoing progress tracking. Students on weekly programs improve 2–3x faster than those on ad hoc sessions. That's the difference.

We exist to make
students better
learners

Magna Tutoring was built on a simple belief: that the right tutor, matched carefully to the right student, changes things. Not just grades β€” confidence, attitude, and the way a student thinks about school.

Why we built
Magna

Tutoring in Australia has a problem. Too many students get matched with whoever is available, handed generic worksheets, and sent home without any real change in how they think about their subject. Parents pay. Results don't follow.

Magna was built to do it differently. The name itself β€” from the Latin for great β€” reflects what we believe every student is capable of with the right support behind them.

We started by asking one question: what would tutoring look like if we were genuinely obsessive about tutor quality, student matching, and measurable results? The answer became Magna.

Today we support students from Kindergarten through to Year 12 across NSW, covering every subject in the NSW curriculum β€” and online for VCE and QCE students too. Every lesson is 1-on-1, every tutor is carefully selected, and every student gets a plan built around their specific goals.

"Our goal isn't just better grades β€” it's better learners."
We want students to leave tutoring feeling capable of tackling problems they haven't seen before β€” not just ones they've memorised.
We want parents to feel genuinely informed β€” not just reassured β€” about their child's progress.
We want tutors who care enough to adapt their approach every single session, not deliver the same lesson to every student.

Three things we
won't compromise on

🎯

Tutor quality above everything

We turn away more than 99% of applicants. The bar is deliberately high because the cost of a mediocre tutor isn't just a wasted hour β€” it's a student who walks away more confused and less confident than when they arrived.

🀝

Matching that actually works

Subject expertise is necessary but not sufficient. We match on personality, learning style, and goals β€” because a student who connects with their tutor learns at a completely different rate to one who doesn't.

πŸ“ˆ

Progress you can see

Regular updates to parents. Session notes. Assessment tracking. We measure what matters and communicate clearly β€” because vague reassurances aren't good enough when you're trusting someone with your child's education.

Who we put in
front of your child

Our tutors are high-achieving university students and graduates β€” state rankers, school duxes, and 99+ ATAR holders who have recently navigated the exact curriculum your child is studying. They remember what it felt like to not understand something, and they know how to bridge that gap.

But academic achievement is the floor, not the ceiling of what we look for. What separates a Magna tutor is the ability to read a student β€” to know when to push, when to slow down, and when to approach something from a completely different angle.

We don't deploy tutors until they've cleared our three-stage screening process. Every single one.

Our 3-stage screening process

1
In-person interview
We meet every tutor face to face before they teach a single student. Academic results don't tell us how someone communicates under pressure or whether they'll adapt when a student is struggling β€” this does.
2
Double reference check
Two separate references, verified directly. We want to understand how this person shows up when it matters β€” not just what they say about themselves.
3
Working With Children Clearance
Government-issued, current, verified before the first session. This isn't optional, and we don't make exceptions. Ever.
Magna is a child-safe organisation. Every policy we have in place exists because your child's safety is non-negotiable β€” not a compliance checkbox.

What makes a
Magna lesson different

πŸ“‹

Curriculum-first, always

Every lesson connects directly to the NSW, VCE, or QCE syllabus. We're not teaching in a vacuum β€” we're supporting exactly what your child's school is doing, timed to their actual assessment calendar.

πŸ”

Diagnostic before anything else

Before the first lesson begins, we find out exactly where the student is β€” not where they should be. Gaps get identified early, before they become serious problems.

πŸ—ΊοΈ

A plan, not just sessions

Weekly students get a structured learning plan built around their subjects, goals, and upcoming assessments. Sessions have a direction β€” they don't just cover whatever came up that week.

πŸ“ž

Parents always in the loop

Regular progress updates after sessions. Honest communication about where things are improving and where there's still work to do. You'll never find out something at report card time that we already knew.

πŸ’‘

Understanding, not memorisation

We build genuine comprehension β€” students who can apply concepts to questions they've never seen before, not just reproduce steps they've practised. That's what holds up under exam pressure.

πŸ”„

Consistent tutors, consistent results

Same tutor, every session. We don't rotate. Relationships matter in teaching, and we don't underestimate how much a student's performance improves when they trust the person across from them.
